Wrap Up: News of the Week
With its long matchmaking and lack of players, generic gameplay and aesthetics, and lack of significant content updates, Amazon’s Crucible numbers are slowly dwindling with fewer than 2500 players concurrently a week into its launch, far from the critical mass required to ensure the games’ continual success. We’re predicting that if Amazon doesn’t buck up soon, Crucible is going to fall into obscurity.
The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has impacted even big companies like Epic with its announcement of Fortnite having to delay its end-of-season event by a week.
On a similar note, the COVID-19 pandemic has affected Blizzard Entertainment as well, as they announced the cancellation of BlizzCon 2020 and their consideration to move it to a digital event early 2021.
Outriders has recently dropped their extended gameplay video as they prepare for their launch in late 2020, with the developers also confirming the move away from “games as service” and not include microtransactions. With its more fast-paced gameplay, class abilities and a unique “world-tier” rogue-lite loot system, we believe Outriders will keep players entertained for hours.
Following the success of Amnesia: The Dark Descent and Amnesia: SOMA, Frictional Games aims to deliver a different kind of horror with their next game, Amnesia: Rebirth.
Sony is holding a conference to showcase all the games that are coming on the PS5 on June 4th. Expect an hour plus of games from both big and small studios!
Witcher has surpassed 50 million copies sold, from the 40 million sales last year. CD Projekt Red is now the highest valued games company in Europe, knocking Ubisoft of its long-held throne.
With the renewal of the partnership between EA, NFL and NFLPA, Madden NFL will be the only authentic NFL simulation for the upcoming 5 years. More releases that are related to NFL, notably an arcade-style game as well as mobile experiences, are planned to be released soon.
The Slovakian Games industry has doubled, reaching an annual turnover of €51 million. This has opened up more opportunities for the industry in Europe, which is already a hotbed for game studios and investments.
Tencent has invested 65 million into Marvelous for a 20% stake, giving Marvelous the funds to expand on existing IP, notably Story of Seasons for which they are developing a Chinese port, as well as creating brand new IP over the next 3 years.
